Deadlines stifle creativity. Deadlines make us cut corners. Deadlines add stress. Deadlines take focus off what is important. Right?
Not so fast. Deadlines can be good for your project.
Deadlines can actually inspire creativity. To meet a hard deadline flexibility is often required. The project scope may need to be adjusted to find the path that delivers the most quality within the constraints of the deadline.
Deadlines force choices (usually 80-20). They force decisions about what is really important and what can wait. There is always something new that can be an improvement. However, when you move the deadline to accommodate more, you delay implementing important benefits. “More” can be reserved for a future vererion.
Deadlines prevent perfection from being the enemy of the good.
