Homer Simpson’s simple advice is hilarious. Too often when a mistake happens the urge is to do a “Homer” and cover it up with something like “It was like that when I got here.”
That’s a deadly path in a world pervaded with social media. Bad news can reach every client’s ear before you have time to fix the mistake. Even fixing things right away won’t be enough to erase the initial sting. Excuses won’t work. Here are three simple rules:
1. Fess Up and apologize. Admit the mistake as soon as it becomes evident to you. Don’t wait.
2. Explain what you are doing to correct the situation.
3. Express appreciation for patience and loyalty.
Combine all three in a single message for the greatest impact. It will make the path to recovery much smoother.
